Q & A with Kathleen
Who uses interior designers?
KK – Anyone who is busy! I’ve met many people who have both amazing taste and ample resources, but have struggled finding enough time to complete design projects in their homes. It’s not enough to choose things that look pretty. An experienced interior designer removes the complications of project management, has reliable vendors who provide quality work, and can recommend fabrics and furniture that wear well. Not everyone has time to do the research on each and every decision.
Do you have a "signature look?"
KK – A person’s home is their most intimate space, and should reflect their preferences and personality. Home is where we retreat from the world, relax with family, and entertain good friends. As a designer, it’s great to have a vision, but a person’s home needs to feel inviting to them. Displaying family photos and incorporating some favorite personal mementos in a polished, edited way can help people show their own style and enjoy being at home.
How do you know where to start on a project?
KK– "Designer’s intuition” actually begins with the client's personal style. I pick up on cues and tailor a look that reflects the personality of the homeowner.
What do you most enjoy about your work?
KK – Helping people. I think interior design is viewed as a luxury, but sometimes we underestimate the profound effect our surroundings have on us. The spaces we share with loved ones are where our most treasured memories happen.
What are some of your favorite things?
KK – I love the saying, “People are more important than things.” That being said, I do appreciate the beauty in everyday things. Some of my favorites are monogrammed linens, scented candles, beautiful fabrics, fresh-cut flowers, and coffee table books. It's a combination of all the little things that helps create an atmosphere of warmth and love for family and friends.
